Description
The Fisher Institute for Medical Research was founded in 1977 along with a group of prominent Texas business and professional leaders. Principal funding was provided by a local matched-funds formula with the Institute for Economic Affairs of London Foundation. Sir Anthony Fisher decided to establish a source of funds to support academic research. He established research institutes in Europe, Canada, South America, and the United States. Sherrill Edwards became the Founding Executive Director of the local Fisher Institute.
At the suggestion of Helen Foytik, Mr. Edwards made the request that medical research and education become the focus of Fisher Institute and that guidance of the institute be vested with H. R. McDaniel, M.D. as Medical Director. Dr. McDaniel served as Medical Director from 1981 to 1996, when he became Medical Director for Mannatech Inc. He was succeeded as Medical Director at Fisher Institute by his wife, Candace Freemam McDaniel, D.O., EdD.
Fisher Institute is primarily supported by private donations, the sale of books and educational materials, fund raising activities and local charities.
The institute is classified by the Internal Revenue Service as a non profit organization, and as such, gifts to the institute are generally tax deductible under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
